Anyone planning to get one? Thoughts? Opinions?
They've added obstacle avoidance and new follow-me modes, but I think that was a 'must-do' for them in order to maintain their lead over Lily, Hexo+ etc, which are offering follow-me features out of the box.
The solid white look helps. Having said that, I can't help feeling like DJI is becoming the "Apple" of the drone industry. They've opened up physical brick and mortar stores, and now they're even offering their own damage insurance policy, like AppleCare. Soon, we'll be seeing lineups around the block at their stores every time a new Phantom comes out!
If you compare their strategy with a company like GoPro's, you'll see big differences. GoPro makes awesome cameras.
In fact, their cameras are too awesome, unfortunately. Nobody has any incentive to upgrade, and they haven't been
pumping out a newer version every year with slightly updated features. Sales have slowed as a result, and investors are getting
the shakes. Then you look at a company like Apple - their product roadmap for the next 10 years has probably been
determined already. They've already got iPhone 20 developed, but they're not going to release it. They're going to
release iPhone 6 this year, iPhone 7 next year, with incremental features so they can milk as much money as
possible from their customers. That helps them project incomes and keep the shareholders happy. It's a proven
strategy, so I'm not surprised. Soon, we'll be seeing Frank Wang wearing a black turtleneck and jeans at every DJI
Frank Wang's look = Black top and a Fedora...pretty close!
Call me one of the mindless fans who 'line up around the block' every time a new DJI comes out, but it's looking pretty good! Except, of course, I'll want the Phantom 5 next year....d'oh!
Despite the short lifecycle for each model, it's still a great UAV in its own right, and you wouldn't be the only one thinking about pulling the trigger on this one!
Here's a review
Looks like DJI is closer to Apple than I thought - Apple is selling the Phantom 4 as an exclusive in its online store!
And here's another great Phantom 4 review by Eric Chenghttp://www.echeng.com/journal/phantom-4
Price drop on the Phantom 3 standard - down to $399 now. Pretty compelling price point for anyone who can do without the new fancy features on the Phantom 4.
In time for April Fool's day - CNET takes a different approach to reviewing the Phantom 4!
