I'm no expert, and hopefully

I'm no expert, and hopefully we'll get some answers from people who are more knowledgable, but here are some things to consider:
Are you thinking of building from the ground up, or getting something that's already mostly assembled and ready to go?
What's your budget?
4 arms? 6 arms?
What size class? 250, 450 etc?

Budget - as little as

Budget - as little as possible? Nothing high-end, probably 250 quad. I was thinking about putting everything together myself, but for the first one, maybe I'll go with something pre-assembled. heh.
I kinda like these ninja 250 from helipal. Know anything about those?

Haven't heard too much about

Haven't heard too much about those, but from some reviews I've seen on some of their other products, seems to be ok. Parts aren't high-end, like you said, but they do the job and all the reviews I've seen were positive. You should check out the offerings from other popular manufacturers too, like http://www.spaceonefpv.com/

http://www.readymaderc.com
to name a few.

If I'm not mistaken, Storm

If I'm not mistaken, Storm Racing uses a lot of EMAX parts, so should be pretty decent. They seem to like packaging the RadioLink AT9 in with their bundles too. Again, not top of the line, but it's a pretty good bang for the buck transmitter. Also have a look at Team Black Sheep's stuff. They're pretty well known.

Liks Blackstar said - TBS

Liks Blackstar said - TBS makes quality stuff. Check out the new TBS Vendetta - http://team-blacksheep.com/products/prod:vendetta
It came out recently - really good design for $499, and no soldering! If I were a first-timer, this is what I'd get..and I have no affiliation with TBS.

and some reviews

Thanks. I actually did see that one. Seems pretty noob-friendly for people like me. I've been looking at Sky Hero too. Agh so busy to many choices now. One day...
